Today unfolded as a pleasantly lazy day at the foot of Kilimanjaro, blessed with beautiful sunny weather. Despite waking up late, I embarked on an adventurous day that took unexpected turns.
The day began with a quirky twist as I entered the shower, only to be greeted by a sudden power outage. With no water pressure and cold water only, I improvised by washing myself using the meager flow from the bottom water outlet. The makeshift shower experience was far from ideal, but it set the tone for a day of spontaneity.
Seated alone in the hostel yard, surrounded by the serenity of the day, I decided to make the most of it. Podcasts became my companions as I soaked in the tranquility. The absence of fellow hostel dwellers hinted that I was the only one left behind while everyone else had set out for the day.
Determined to make the day memorable, I opted for a leisurely walk. My initial plan was to enjoy the view of Kilimanjaro from the football stadium and explore the university campus. However, fate had other plans; the stadium was unexpectedly closed until Friday, and I found myself on the wrong day of the week.
Undeterred, I recalled a hostel I had stayed in a year ago and decided to revisit it. The journey to "Hakuna Matata" Hostel turned out to be a puzzle. Not only had it vanished from booking websites and Google Maps, but the physical hostel itself had closed and undergone a complete transformation.
Reflecting on my day's adventures, I realized that my 5km walk had not led me to the anticipated stadium with a stunning Kilimanjaro backdrop, nor had it reunited me with a place I had called home a year ago. However, the unexpected twists of the day served as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of travel.
As I sit here, contrasting my whereabouts from a year ago in Dar es Salaam planning a trip to Zanzibar, I appreciate the spontaneity of life. This year, in Moshi, I find myself relishing the majestic presence of Kilimanjaro. Travel, it seems, always has a way of surprising us and making each day an adventure of its own.
