Scotney castle is a medieval moated castle there is also a Victorian manor on the grounds that was a house of curiosities. it’s last owner died in 1970 and even though he gave the house to the national trust his widow continued to live there up to 2007 when she died age 99.
The earliest record of occupancy on the land dates from 1137, and the oldest parts of the Old Castle were built in 1378 by Roger de Ashburnham. Edward Hussey I purchased the Scotney estate in 1778. It passed down three generations before it’s final owner Christopher Hussey bequeathed it to the national trust, on the condition his wife could continue to live there until her death.
I’ll show you the Victorian Manor House in the next blog but for now here is the castle:
Castle is very beautiful.
With its surrounding and water it is like from fairy tale.
Looks like nice place to spend time
Wow! Very beautiful photos, surely one of them would have been excellent for my post yesterday to illustrate my father's sonnet 46. :)
