I took a walk around the general streets of Heraklion I didn’t have chance to see everything there is and missed a few monuments and the cathedral but I did get to see the new and old town, the archeological museum and Knossos palace, I’ll make those posts later:
I loved the streets of Heraklion most of them were paved in marble or at least a stone that felt like it it was smooth and felt very luxurious, in guessing it is to keep the heat off from getting scorching. It was Sunday when I went in so most the shops were closed but I’m not keen on shopping anyways. The old town market was open and bustling though and most the cafes and coffee shops were open. Most of my footage is in video but I managed to get a few shots:
This is the Morosini Fountain in Lion Square. it dates back to 1628 and is surrounded by mature trees and cafés and serves as the center of action in the old city.
It originally had an important role in providing drinking water to the citizens of Heraklion, being originally connected to a 14-kilometer aqueduct that supplied water to the city from the slopes of Mt. Juktas. It was neglected for a long time before being restored to its original condition.
I saw quite a few statues and monuments :
This one is the Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos and wae tribute to the great Greek politician of the early 20th century. It is a regularly used meeting point for those in Heraklion.
