This is one man’s modern day castle. It was built between 1911 and 1931 by Julius Drewe, who was the founder of the Hugely successful Home and Colonial Stores. It took so long to build due to the First World War and the depression, despite having hundreds of people working on the project. The castle is located in Devon, on what Drewe believed was the land of his medieval ancestor, Drogo de Teigne, after whom he named the castle.
He commissioned the architect Edwin Lutyens to build his dream home and it is the last castle that’s ever been built in the Uk.
It was Drewe’s intention to build the castle for use as a family home and to allow them entry into the gentile circles, which they were currently not a part of despite his great wealth. From what i heard he had a number of arguments with the architect and insisted on a flat roof, which went on to lead to a number of problems with leaks. The family did occupy some of the rooms from the 1920s but the project was only completed one year before Drewe died, so he did not even get to enjoy what he had built. His family continued to live there for a while but the leaks got worse and began to cause serious damage to the house.
The castle was given to the National Trust in 1974 and they spent around £11 million pounds repairing it to be the tourist attraction it is today.
There is also a really nice shop on the grounds and a cafe.
