What is history in the square?.
“History in the square” refers to populous squares as a theater of history, but even more to the idea of bringing history to the general public or, if you will, the general public to history. For a better understanding of events, other fields of knowledge are mobilized: from anthropology to sociology, from legal sciences to philosophy, from biology to art history. Other professions, such as journalists and magistrates, and other languages, such as literary, figurative and musical, are involved because of their relevance in historical processes and their evocative capacity.
####The themes.
History in the Square focuses on the paths and events of the past based on the great questions of the present. Previous editions have dealt with very different themes year after year, but always strongly linked to contemporaneity.
The venue.
The venue for the event will be the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, a place steeped in history in a city where the dimension of time is decidedly broader than that of space. The Ducal Palace, today the seat of a rich cultural activity in which historical themes already occupy a place of primary importance, has a very versatile structure, which allows the simultaneous hosting of numerous initiatives of different characteristics and dimensions: from the large rooms of the Major and Minor Council to the spaces dedicated to exhibitions and educational services.
The educational dimension.
In line with the specific cultural activity of the Foundation, particular attention is paid to relations with schools of various levels and grades and, therefore, to the public of students of all ages. A specific space welcomes children and offers them the opportunity to test themselves with laboratory activities, readings, tours among sources, sounds and images, to enter actively into the theme of the review.
Realization.
History in the Square is an initiative created by the Palazzo Ducale Foundation in collaboration with the Municipality of Genoa, the Primo Levi Cultural Center, the University of Genoa and numerous institutional partners and various public and private sponsors.
Curatorship.
Since 2025, the curatorship of the exhibition has been entrusted to Carlotta Sorba, professor of Contemporary History at the University of Padua and of Cultural History at the European University Institute of Florence, with Emmanuel Betta, professor of Contemporary History at the Department of History, Anthropology, Religions, Arts and Spectacles of La Sapienza - University of Rome.

La XIV edición de La Storia in Piazza se celebrará del 27 al 30 de marzo de 2025
¿Qué es la historia en la plaza?.
“Historia en la plaza” hace referencia a las plazas populosas como teatro de la historia, pero más aún a la idea de acercar la historia al gran público o, si se quiere, al gran público a la historia. Se trata de un repaso de grandes temáticas históricas no reservadas a los especialistas, concentradas en cuatro días repletos de propuestas: conferencias, entrevistas, espectáculos, conciertos, talleres y actividades para escuelas, exposiciones, todo ello en torno al tema elegido anualmente.
Conocimientos e idiomas.
En el contexto de la revisión, el conocimiento histórico naturalmente juega el papel del león, pero no pretende ser autosuficiente. Para una mejor comprensión de los acontecimientos se movilizan otros campos del saber: de la antropología a la sociología, de las ciencias jurídicas a la filosofía, de la biología a la historia del arte. Intervienen otras profesiones, como la del periodista o la del magistrado, y otros lenguajes, como el literario, el figurativo, el musical, por su relevancia en los procesos históricos y por su capacidad evocadora.
Los temas.
Historia en la Plaza se centra en los recorridos y acontecimientos del pasado a partir de las grandes preguntas del presente. Las ediciones anteriores han abordado temáticas muy diversas año tras año, pero siempre fuertemente ligadas a la contemporaneidad.
La sede.
La sede del evento será el Palacio Ducal de Génova, un lugar cargado de historia en una ciudad donde la dimensión del tiempo es decididamente más amplia que la del espacio. El Palacio Ducal, hoy sede de una rica actividad cultural en la que los temas históricos ocupan ya un lugar de primera importancia, tiene una estructura muy versátil, que permite la celebración simultánea de numerosas iniciativas de características y dimensiones diferentes: desde las grandes salas del Consejo Mayor y Menor a los espacios destinados a exposiciones y servicios didácticos.
La dimensión educativa.
En consonancia con la actividad cultural específica de la Fundación, se presta especial atención a las relaciones con las escuelas de los distintos niveles y grados y, por tanto, al público de estudiantes de todas las edades. Un espacio específico acoge a los niños y les ofrece la oportunidad de probarse con actividades de laboratorio, lecturas, recorridos entre fuentes, sonidos e imágenes, para entrar activamente en la temática de la revisión.
Realización.
Historia en la Plaza es una iniciativa creada por la Fundación Palazzo Ducale en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Génova, el Centro Cultural Primo Levi, la Universidad de Génova y numerosos socios institucionales y diversos patrocinadores públicos y privados.
Curaduría.
Desde 2025, la curaduría de la exposición está confiada a Carlotta Sorba, profesora de Historia Contemporánea en la Universidad de Padua y de Historia Cultural en el Instituto Universitario Europeo de Florencia, con Emmanuel Betta, profesor de Historia Contemporánea en el Departamento de Historia, Antropología, Religiones, Artes y Espectáculos de La Sapienza – Universidad de Roma.
