Turtle watching is one of the famous activities in Oman among the tourists. We do not see them on the City Beaches, there are specific places only a little away from the city where you find them. There are a few Resorts also build around these beaches since it's one of the most sorted tourist destination. Though Turtles have a very long life still they come under endangered species.
Some time back we made a visit to one of these beaches to see the Turtles. It was a lucky experience on that particular day as we could also see the Turtle laying eggs. This is a rare sight to see. They dig a deep hole and then almost burry themselves inside and then lay eggs.
As the eggs were coming out one after another the hole was getting filled up.
Turtles normally lay upto around 150 eggs in one go, and from the 1000s of hatchlings that happen only 2 to 3 grow out to be big. Once they hatch, with natural instincts they swim towards the Ocean, but with the water currents and other big fishes inside the ocean, the survival rate is very poor. Most of them die off when they are small, that's how the natural process work for them.
While this one was busy laying eggs, there were others around.
On some of the beaches where there are security measures we are not allowed to click pictures also, but this is an open beach so we could get some videos and pictures.
It was a 1 hr. drive each way to this place, but it was worth it.
