Messina was one of the destinations on our cruise. I was really wondering before reaching here what this place would be like as I had not heard much about it, until I saw my cruise itinerary. Well, it was a pleasant little place. Messina is called the gateway to Sicily. It's not a very big place and if you have some good time at hand you can explore the place on foot also. We were thinking how to explore the place in the mean time we saw people going around the place in horse cart, we also decided to do the same. It would fun and something different.
The best thing what I liked in this place is the Clock Tower near the Duomo. Every city of Italy we saw there was a clock tower. This was a unique musical clock tower. At 12:00 p.m. there is a musical show. We were there on time, so we managed to see the show.
This is the Duomo of Messina, very attractive from the inside. There is no comparison that I can make with rest of the Cathedrals as each one had their own beauty and charm, and I would just keep getting mesmerized looking at each one of them
This is the Clock Tower next to the Cathedral
If you take a closer look at the tower, you will see that there are some figures in it. They kind of move with the music, hence it's called the musical clock tower.
That's the main Altar of the Cathedral
I just clicked a few pictures in the Cathedral
After visiting the Cathedral and watching the Clock Tower show, we took the horse cart ride around the place. I can say that this is quite a historic place.
There is a Vittorio Emanuele III Galleria in this place as well, but no comparison to the one in Milan. We did not visit this one, but looked ok from the outside. These are the first enclosed shopping malls in the world that Italy gave. No matter why it is the fashion capital.
This is the Vittorio Theatre, quite traditional and old school.
The famous Orion Fountain of Messina. It comes from the 16th century. The Horse cart guy told us the story of this fountain. He said that previously the statues which depicts the God of the Sea, his hand that is pointing out was first pointing into the city but there were some major floods and a lot of damage that happened after that as a protection to the city the hand points towards the Sea.
This was in the passing
After the end of our Horse ride, we decided to have our lunch at one of the local restaurants there. The unique thing available at the restaurant were these drinks. One is like Miranda and the other one is like Coke, they are the local brands of the place. The Miranda flavor was good but the Coke one tasted more like a cough syrup...hehehe.
A day is never enough to explore a city but still we managed to see quite a bit and it was a good day spent in Messina
