Travel Diaries - #Throwbacks - A Day in Alexandria

in travel •  8 months ago

From all the cities of Egypt, Alexandria is one that I liked the most. It is on the Mediterranean coastline. Whole of Egypt has many historic places to visit, as we all know the Giant Pyramid of Gizas are one of the seven wonders of the world. Here in Alexandria also there are some very interesting places to see. Like the largest and the ancient library of the world stands here. The history of this library is that it was founded in c. 323– c. 283 BC by Demetrius a student of Aristotle who had been exiled from Athens and taken refuge in Alexandria within the Ptolemaic court. Then in 48 BCE the library was burnt down by Julius Caesar in a civil war, it's said that it was an accident. He was cut off by a large fleet of Egyptian boats in the harbor of Alexandria. He ordered the boats to be burned. The fleet was destroyed, but the flames spread to the city and the library was also destroyed with it.

The Library still has many interesting artifacts from the past and some modern art as well. The another important thing to visit in Alexandria is the Amphitheatre and the Montazah Palace and Park. The Amphitheatre was built in the 4th century by the Romans. The Montazah Palace and Park is a very new structure. It was built in the early 20th century as a residence for the Egyptian royal family.

Some pictures to share with of this place.
That's the Montazah Palace in the background, we could not go inside the palace.

Such a wonderful holiday it was with my family. We had a 2 weeks holiday in Egypt and visited the length and breadth of this country. A very interesting place, it's not only filled with rich history but also a very scenic place.
