Barcelona and Berlin, similar and diverse in some respects, are two cosmopolitan cities with a distinct personality. [ENG/ESP]

In the last few months I have published in #BLURT some posts about my travels in these two cities while living in Italy, a stay that lasted several years.

Each with its own characteristics. Exceptional cities with a whole history behind them, similar in some aspects but very different in others.

En los últimos meses he publicado en #BLURT algunos posts relativos a mis viajes en estas dos ciudades mientras vivía en Italia, una estadía que duró varios años.

Cada una con sus características. Ciudades excepcionales con toda una historia a sus espaldas, similares en algunos aspectos pero muy distintas en otros.

Barcelona and Berlin are two cities that I have got to know quite well as a tourist since I have visited them several times. At first sight they may seem very different, since they belong to two countries that - in principle - are very different in terms of idiosyncrasy, lifestyle, artistically speaking.

But nevertheless, as you get to know them, they turn out to be more similar than they seemed at first. Or, at least, the difference is not as great as we thought.

Barcelona y Berlín son dos ciudades que he aprendido a conocer bastante bien como turista ya que las he visitado varias veces, que a simple vista pueden parecer muy diferentes, ya que pertenecen de dos países que -en principio- son muy diferentes en cuanto a idiosincracia, estilo de vida, artísticamente hablando.

Pero sin embargo a medida que se las conoce resultan más parecidas que lo que parecían al principio. O, al menos, no la diferencia no es tan grande como pensábamos.

Both are cosmopolitan cities, Barcelona reigns supreme in the south of Europe while Berlin reigns supreme in the centre.

The Catalan city has a notable Hispanic influence, as could not be otherwise, Latin Americans with their own characteristics form an important part of its urban core. Berlin, on the other hand, apart from the Austrian ethnicity, has an important component in the Turkish community, which through generations has been perfectly integrated into society and today is part of important directors of the main German multinational companies.

Las dos son ciudades cosmopolitas, Barcelona reina en el sur de Europa mientras Berlín lo hace en el centro.

La ciudad catalana tiene una notable influencia hispana como no podía ser de otra manera, latinoamericanos con características propias forman una parte importante de su núcleo urbano. Berlín, en cambio, aparte de la etnia austriaca tiene un importante componente en la comunidad turca que a través de generaciones se han integrado perfectamente en la sociedad y hoy hacen parte de importantes directores de las principales empresas multinacionales alemanas.

The myth of Arian purity, so assimilated to Hitler's national-socialist regime (Nazism), has remained just that: a myth. A past of which it is not necessary to be ashamed, but it is necessary to keep it always in mind so as not to make the same mistakes.

Barcelona is a city that loves to show tourists (and the rest of the Spanish people) its art: the Sagrada Familia cathedral, the historic centre, the omnipresence of its greatest artistic exponent, the architect Antoni Gaudí, the Guell Park designed in his image and likeness and so many works, sculptures and monuments that it would be impossible to mention by heart.

El mito de la pureza ariana, tan asimilado al régimen nacional-socialista de Hitler (nazismo) ha quedado en eso: solo en mito. Un pasado del cuál no es necesario vergonzarse pero si tenerlo siempre presente para no incurrir en los mismos errores.

Barcelona es una ciudad que ama mostrar al turista (y al resto de los españoles) su arte: la catedral La Sagrada Familia, el centro histórico, la omnipresencia de su mayor exponente artístico, el arquitecto Antoni Gaudí, el Parque Guell ideado a su imagen y semejanza y tantas obras, esculturas y monumentos que sería impsoible mencionar de memoria.

Berlin, on the other hand, is the city that represents (especially after the fall of the wall) the unification of an industrially powerful Germany, before, during and after the introduction of the euro. Badly hit by the bombings of the Second World War, many of its historic buildings have been restored (such as the Reichstag) but it is difficult to find an artist who fully represents it as Barcelona does with Gaudí.

Berlín, en cambio, es la ciudad que representa (sobre todo después de la caída del muro) la unificación de una Alemania industrialmente muy poderoso, antes, durante y después de la instauración del euro. Sumamente golpeada por los bombardeos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial muchos de sus edificios históricos han sido restaurados (com el Reichstag) pero es difícil encontrar un artista que la represente plenamente como lo hace Barcelona con Gaudí.

On the other hand, Barcelona has something that not only Berlin but the whole of Germany lacks: the sea. Hence the large number of German tourists who leave their country during the summer to spend their summer holidays on the sunny beaches of Spain or Italy.

Por otro lado Barcelona tiene algo de lo cuál no solo Berlín sino toda Alemania carece: el mar. De ahí la gran cantidad de turistas alemanes que durante el verano dejan su país para transcorrer las vacaciones de verano en las asoleadas playas españolas o italianas.

Barcelona and its charm are characterised by the Mediterranean character of its inhabitants and buildings. The proximity of the sea, the exquisite Mediterranean diet, its narrow streets (in which it resembles many Italian cities) give it that particular attraction which is very difficult to leave.

Barcelona y su encanto se caracterizan por el carácter mediterráneo que prevalece en la misma, ya sea en sus habitantes como en sus edificios. La cercanía del mar, la exquisita dieta medietrránea, sus callejuelas (en las que se parece a muchas ciudades italianas) le dan ese atractivo tan particular del cuál es muy difícil despegarse.

In Berlin, on the other hand, we feel the weight of European history at every turn. Perhaps the excessive repression of the past with totalitarian regimes, including the construction of a wall that for decades was the symbol of the division not only of Germany but also of two totally opposed ideological political currents such as capitalism and communism, has made it acquire a certain rebellious and liberal style. It can be found in the street, in every free space, in every piece of the wall that was left undemolished to allow artists from all over the world to express themselves in it, with their art, their feeling of repudiation, but at the same time of a new freedom.

3 million people who found a way to show and express themselves as they are, without barriers and without concealment.

En cambio en Berlín notamos el peso de la historia de Europa a cada paso. Tal vez la excesiva represión del pasado con regímenes totalitarios, incluyendo la construcción de un muro que por décadas fue el símbolo de la división no solo alemana sino de dos corrientes políticas ideológicas totalmente opuestas como lo fueron los llamadaos capitalismo y comunismo, la ha hecho adquirir un cierto estilo rebelde y liberal. Que se encuentra en calle calle, en cada espacio libre, en cada pedazo del muro que fue dejado sin demoler para permitir a artistas de todo el mundo de expresión en el mismo, con su arte, su sentimiento de repudio, pero a la vez de una nueva libertad.

We could talk for hours and hours about the differences and similarities between the two cities, we could express them in words or graphically, but there are some details that have to be seen, they cannot be explained in words.

Berlin is an amazing city. When I visited it last time, it was not long before the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of its most illustrious musicians: Ludwig van Beethoven.

On the other hand, it is considered one of the greenest cities in the world. The Berliner is innovative, reinventing himself step by step.

Podríamos estar hablando horas y horas de las diferencias y similitudes entre ambas ciudades, podríamos expresarlas a través de palabras o gráficamente, pero hay algunos detalles que hay que verlos, no se pueden explicar con palabras.

Berlín es una ciudad sorprendente. Cuando la visité la última vez faltaba poco para el aniversario, los 250 años del nacimiento de uno de sus músicos más ilustres: Ludwig van Beethoven.

Por otro lado es considerada una de las ciudades más ecológicas del mundo. El berlinés es innovador, se reinventa paso tras paso.

With Gaudí's architecture at every turn, Barcelona appears to the eyes of tourists and the whole world as one of the trendiest European capitals.

It is a creative, bustling city, always on the move, which combines new trends in the world of art, culture, fashion and gastronomy with the creativity of its artists and designers, always with respect and care between the traditional and the modern.

On the one hand, the historical case is a faithful reflection of its past and on the other hand, modern neighbourhoods and the latest urban trends make it a place where a visit seems to be more of an obligation than an objective.

Con la arquitectura de Gaudì a cada paso Barcelona se presenta ante los ojos del turista y del mundo entero como una de las capitales europeas más trendy.

Es una ciudad creativa, bulliciosa, siempre en movimiento, que combinalas nuevas tendencias en el mundo del arte, de la cultura, la moda y la gastronomía con la creatividad de sus artistas y diseñadores siempre con el respeto y cuidado entre lo tradicional y lo moderno.

Por un lado el caso histórico fiel reflejo de su pasado y por otro lado modernos barrios y tendencias urbanísticas de última generación la hacen un lugar donde visitarlo parece ser más una obligación que un objetivo.
