My Journey from Norway to Tibet: A Remarkable Experience

in travel •  3 days ago

Travel from Norway to Tibet was an adventure of contrasts and discovery. Coming from the quiet fjords of Scandinavia, I found myself in the vibrant, spiritual heart of the Tibetan Plateau—a place unlike anywhere else.

The journey started with a flight from Oslo to Chengdu, China. The long-haul flight was smooth, and upon arrival in Chengdu, I had time to savor its famous Sichuan cuisine and visit the giant panda reserve. The next morning, I boarded a flight to Lhasa, and as we approached the city, the snow-capped Himalayan peaks greeted us—a breathtaking preview of what was to come.

Upon landing at Lhasa’s Gonggar Airport, I met my guide, Tenzin. From the first smile, he made me feel at home. His knowledge of Tibetan history, culture, and spirituality was profound, and his warmth turned this journey into something extraordinary.

Our first destination was Lhasa, where I marveled at the majestic Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and the bustling Barkhor Street. Tenzin shared stories about the palace's history and its significance, making each visit deeply enriching. He also guided me on how to acclimatize to the altitude, ensuring the trip was comfortable.

From Lhasa, we embarked on a road trip to explore Tibet’s stunning landscapes. Driving through the rugged terrain, we visited Lake Yamdrok with its turquoise waters, passed by glaciers, and eventually reached Shigatse. Here, the Tashilhunpo Monastery—a grand, serene complex—left a lasting impression.

The highlight of the trip was visiting the Everest Base Camp. Standing at the foot of the world’s highest peak, surrounded by silence and nature’s grandeur, was a humbling experience. Tenzin’s enthusiasm was infectious as he explained the history of climbers and the local Tibetan reverence for Mount Everest, known as "Chomolungma."

Throughout the journey, the kindness of the
locals, the beauty of the landscapes, and the spiritual energy of Tibet left me in awe. I left with not just memories of stunning views but a deeper appreciation for Tibetan culture, all thanks to a fantastic guide who made it unforgettable.
