The green season is here and with it come cheaper prices on Costa Rica vacation packages, tours, hotels, not to mention the country springs to life with the first rains. All that looked brown only a month ago has come back in lush greens and a rainbow of colored flowers.
Many people don't realize that May - August is the best time to enjoy Costa Rica. Sure it's great to get away from the cold for some, but you are also missing out in some ways when it comes to getting to know the real Costa Rica. Less crowds and Green Season Rates are only part of the reason to visit during these months.
This is absolutely the best time to run Costa Rica rivers. The Pacuare, the Toro, the Naranja, the Balsa, just to name a few. The Pacuare is rated by National Geographic as one of the top ten rivers in the entire world. Picturesque is an understatement, not to mention the class 4 - 5 rapids. This also holds true for Kayaking throughout the country, with the rain comes rivers full of water.
Surfing is better in the green season too, Canyoneering, the art of rappelling, down climbing, and river tracing a series of waterfalls in the rainforest is also better. Not to mention when the first rains come the rain-forests also come alive!
The green season marks the time of turtle nesting in Tortuguero. This is one of the most amazing moments to be a part of, to witness miracles of nature and the start of new life.
The month of July also holds a secret; it brings with it El Veranillo, or the little summer. This can be up to 2 weeks of little or no rain and if you are lucky enough to be here you are getting the best of both worlds, dry season in the middle of the Green Season.
In September and October when much of the country is entering the 2 months of the year truly deserved of the name "Rainy Season", the Caribbean side gets there own little dry season. This area has its own feel and rhythm, heavy island influences, and unspoiled beaches make up the majority of this coast line.
