Some quick thoughts:
I think conservatives have a better understanding that humans are imperfect. Progressives cannot tolerate an imperfect person if that imperfection goes against their world view.
A Christian would hug a racist, split a piece of bread and accept them when they repent. The progressive will only accept them if they are ideologically aligned with them.
