The table is one of the most intimate places in out lives, it is there that we give ourselves to each other. When we say " eat with me, take some more, have nothing plate, enjoy it, we say a lot more than our words can express, we invite our friends to be part our lives, we want them to be nurtured by the food and drink, yes the Christmas meals becomes a communion, that is why the refusal to eat what a host offers is like an offensive act, is like rejection, we become part of one another on this table. We need to eat and drink but having a meal is more than just eating and drinking, it is celebrating life, the life we share, it is a sacred event, at the table we become vulnerable to each other, around the table we have become family and friends.
