The Power Bank Myth

in technology •  last year

I think everyone knows that a power bank is a mobile energy store. I have 3 power banks. Both are of the same brand. The brand itself MI.

How chose good power Bank?

Before buying a power bank, it is important to know the capacity of the battery in the mobile phone you are using. For example, I have an Apple X. The battery capacity of this phone is 2700 mah, so I can fully charge it with a 10000 mah power bank exactly 3 times.
If your phone has a 4000 mah battery, you can do it twice. Then you need to buy a power bank with more than 10000 mah.

Does the battery life decrease after charging from the power bank?

Yes, every time a battery is charged, the battery life will decrease regardless of the charging method. Batteries that do not decrease like that have not yet been made in the world. Quantum batteries are still a concept.

Why do you say that batteries are damaged because of power banks?

People in Sri Lanka are looking for cheap goods, so many people believe that opinion. Usually, when you measure the DC current coming from the charger that comes with the phone with a multimeter in the AC range, you will see that a very small AC current is coming out. But when you measure it in a power bank, it is not like that because the power bank has the same battery as the one in the mobile phone. If the power bank we buy is a good one, there is no need to worry about its output. I am saying that an original power bank is designed to protect your phone with short circuit protection and overcharge protection.

In general, the price of power banks of bands like Anker, Huawei and Bases in Sri Lanka is high. Because of this, everyone buys power bank of Xiaomi band. There are two types of Mi / Redmi power banks that can be bought cheap everywhere in the market. Using these fake power banks without the protection I mentioned above can damage your phone's battery.

In the original power banks of these two types of power banks called Mi/ Redmi, they have included a low power mood, we can take care of it by pressing the button inside the power bank twice. When you press it twice, the LED on the battery indicator of the power bank will start blinking. Low power mode is used for devices that charge at a low rate, for example, for devices such as Bluetooth hands-free, smart watches, etc..

The DC voltage output from a power bank is smoother than the original wall adapter you use. When you buy a power bank, make sure to buy an original one.

So let's see how to charge a battery properly

Mobile phones have lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries. You may remember the Nokia mobile phone we used a few years ago. The batteries that came with them had a weakness called memory effect.

Memory effect- It means that when you charge the battery daily without charging it to 100%, when you disconnect the battery, it remembers the amount of charge the battery has. Over time, the battery calculates its maximum and minimum charge limits to prevent overcharging. I hope you have an experience with this. That's why the phone turns off when the battery is at 50%.

Generally, current lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries do not have this weakness and you can use them normally.

Nowadays mobile phones should be properly charged between 20% - 80%. Why do you say that? Every battery has a lifespan and a rate at which it can be charged. A battery typically has 500 cycles. A cycle is considered the number of times it is 100% charged. If you charge between 20% - 80% once a day, your one cycle will take 2 days to count, so the battery life will be longer.

When charging and using a battery, if its temperature exceeds 34 Celsius, its life will decrease. This is why they say not to use the phone while charging.

So there is a chemical reactant in this battery and the chemical liquid in it turns into something that happens every time it is charged. The people who are most worried about batteries in Sri Lanka are the people who use Apple devices. So I hope you have learned something from this post.
