How to Make Boba Tea (Bubble Tea) at Home
Boba tea, or bubble tea, is a popular Taiwanese drink that combines tea, milk, and chewy tapioca pearls (boba). Here’s how to make a classic version of milk tea with boba at home!
Ingredients:
For the Tapioca Pearls (Boba):
- 1 cup tapioca pearls (store-bought)
- 4 cups water
For the Milk Tea:
- 2 cups water
- 2 black or green tea bags (or 1-2 tbsp loose-leaf tea)
- 1-2 tbsp sugar or sweetener of choice (adjust to taste)
- 1 cup milk (or any milk alternative, like almond or oat milk)
Optional:
- Ice cubes
- Flavored syrups (like vanilla, caramel, or fruit-flavored syrups)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Tapioca Pearls (Boba)
- Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot.
- Add 1 cup of tapioca pearls to the boiling water and stir to prevent sticking.
- Cook the pearls according to the package instructions (usually around 15-20 minutes), stirring occasionally.
- Once the pearls are soft and chewy, remove from heat and let them sit for 5 minutes.
- Drain and rinse the cooked pearls with cold water.
- Optional: Soak the pearls in a bit of sugar or syrup for extra flavor while you prepare the tea.
Brew the Tea
- Boil 2 cups of water, then steep the tea bags (or loose-leaf tea) for about 5-7 minutes for a strong flavor.
- Remove the tea bags or strain the loose tea leaves, then add 1-2 tablespoons of sugar or sweetener to the hot tea and stir to dissolve.
- Let the tea cool, or place it in the fridge to chill.
Combine Tea and Milk
- Once the tea is cool, pour it into a glass and add 1 cup of milk (adjust for your taste). You can add ice cubes if you prefer iced boba tea.
Add the Boba Pearls
- Spoon a few tablespoons of the tapioca pearls into the bottom of a glass.
- Pour the milk tea over the pearls.
Serve
- Stir, insert a wide straw, and enjoy your homemade boba tea!
Tips for Customizing Your Boba Tea:
- Flavored Boba Tea: Add flavored syrups like honey, vanilla, or fruit syrup to the tea for different flavor profiles.
- Fruit Tea: Use green tea and add fresh fruit or fruit syrups for a refreshing fruit boba tea.
- Different Milk Options: Try almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk for a different twist on milk tea.
Enjoy your refreshing, homemade boba tea!
