Background -

A human skull was discovered by a bridge-building worker near Harbin, a city in the northernmost province of China during the Japanese occupation in the 1930's.

The worker hid the skull in his well and didn't tell anyone about it until he was on his deathbed in 2018.

His surviving family dug up the skull from the muddy bottom of the old well and contacted the appropriate authorities.

Current Scientific Findings -

Chinese researchers have concluded that the skull belongs to a new species of human, naming it "Homo longi" - after the Long Jiang Region of northeast China where the skull was discovered over 90 years ago.

Long Jiang means "Dragon River”; hence, Homo longi's nickname of “The Dragon Man".

Dragon Man lived in the cold northeastern region of China over 140,000 years ago.

DNA analysis reveals Dragon Man to be closer to Homo Sapiens than Neanderthals.

Other Opinions -

Some scientists believe that Dragon Man may be part of the mysterious "Denisovan" branch of the human species.

Denisovans were a group of archaic humans first identified from a single pinkie bone in a Siberian cave.

They coexisted with modern humans and other archaic human species, such as Neanderthals, for hundreds of thousands of years, until they went extinct an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 years ago.
