Spay or Ovariohysterectomy is a process in which the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus of a female cat or dog is being removed. This makes her unable to reproduce and eliminates her heat cycle and breeding instinct-related behavior. For male cat or dog it is called neuter or Orchiectomy in which his testes were removed.
Spaying prevents uterine infections and decreases the incidence of breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.
Spaying is also one way of controlling the fast growing population of our pet animals like cats and dogs.
When Leighra was about 6 months old and begun to shows breeding instinct-related behavior we brought her to the veterinarian to be spayed.
We put an improvised Elizabethan collar around her neck. An Elizabethan collar (also known as an E-collar or a buster collar) is a plastic hood or cone that helps protect injuries or wounds from further damage. For our cat we just made the DIY using plastic envelope and formed it into a cone shape. We use this to prevent from licking her wound. Doing this, infections will be prevented and wounds will heal easily.
