Like many aspiring "emperors" Putin is mental in many ways, in the sense that he has no grip on the part of reality in which huge numbers of people — including in his own country — do not want what he envisions. Seems to me that most people of his "kind" want to move the world and humanity backwards towards more primitive times, not forward.
But yes, he just knows force and doing things by strength as a measure of validity. Just look at the various video clips of him that have surfaced over the years... here's a Head of State of a major power letting himself be broadcast chopping logs and killing bears...
Someone should propose to him that the matter be settled with armwrestling, not diplomacy... he's understand that...

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Putin needs to be stopped. Dialogue at the verge of human extinction is weakness. Economic sanctions are not enough, world leaders and the G7 need to have a sincerity of purpose otherwise Putin is not going back. We need to face this reality otherwise tomorrow it will extend beyond Ukraine.
