The Impact of Social Media Addiction on Personal Development and Society

When did you last use social media, if at all? Imagine a life without social media .
A younger couple was using their phones next to me when I was seated in a restaurant the other day. At least three other couples were engaging in the same activity as I turned to look around the venue. When I turned to look, I saw that my friend was also scrolling on her phone lustfully.

"What was existence like before this?" suddenly occurred to me. I honestly can't recall. Social media hadn't really taken off in our culture when I was growing up. Thank goodness, I grew up in a rural area and have interests other than wasting hours idly scrolling over the internet. I've grown more conscious of my surroundings over my life, and when I observe today's kids, they are addicted to their devices. The worst thing I have ever witnessed is a 3-year-old whose eyes have become dark from staring at his tablet screen for extended periods of time.

Why have we given social media such free reign in our lives? Imagine where you could be in life if you spent as much time browsing rather than learning a skill or reading great books. Consider how much more fully formed you might become as a person if we forwent the immediate enjoyment of watching cat videos in favor of studying music—or anything else that takes your fancy. Say you dedicated 20 minutes every day to learning a new language, launching a venture, or contacting a long-time friend. Imagine your current situation.

What makes this such a significant concern, and how is it destroying our society? We are losing an capacity to really and genuinely connect with others around us, and I think that is what is hurting our society. We are giving up qualities and skills that earlier generations excelled in. People who labor too slowly, believe distinctly than we do, or make life appear so glamorous are starting to lose our tolerance. We all blindly accept the vast amount of false information that circulates on social media as fact. Social media presents a distorted image of who you, me, and they actually are. In order to get ourselves on the right track, we must stop using screens all day.
A boundary ought to exist.Social media usage should have boundaries and restrictions in place to lessen its detrimental impacts since it is improper and uncultured to spend more time on social media than on self-improvement activities.
