The Walking Dead is an American television series created by Frank Darabont, acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
Based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman, also executive producer of the show, illustrated by Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard and published by Image Comics.
Compared to the comic book, whose storyline is being followed, the series features several new story developments, including the introduction of new characters.
The Walking Dead premiered on 31 October 2010. It aired exclusively on AMC in the United States and internationally on Fox Networks Group and Disney+. The tenth season premiered on 6 October 2020 and has been renewed through an eleventh season.
Beginning with its third season, The Walking Dead has attracted more viewers aged 18-49 than any other series on cable or broadcast network television, although viewership has declined in recent seasons. Rick Grimes is a sheriff's deputy who is the victim of an accident during a shootout with outlaws: shot in the back, he goes into a coma, leaving his wife Lori and son Carl in tears.
Waking up a short time later is traumatic: the hospital is destroyed and full of corpses. It doesn't take Rick long to understand the situation: the ‘virus’, which seemed to be under control before the accident, has taken hold of him.
The dead awaken and attack the living, whose presence is dwindling. The deputy will use all his survival skills and weapon skills to survive and get out of the city, finding other surviving refugees in the forest; among them he finds his family and his best friend Shane. Forced to move continuously, they soon realise that the first and true enemies are not the undead, but humans, driven solely by survival instinct.
As most people know, the beginning of the zombie apocalypse starts with the spread of a deadly virus, of hitherto unknown origin, and the subsequent worldwide social chaos.
The story begins in a town on the outskirts of Atlanta, USA, where Rick Grimes, a police officer along with his partner Shane, respond to a call to intervene in the pursuit of some suspects. During the apprehension of the fugitives, Rick is shot and must be taken to hospital where he loses consciousness. After a while, Rick wakes up from his coma to find a desolate scene. The abandoned hospital, hundreds of dead people in the building, disoriented, and not understanding what was going on.
As time passes, he understands the new reality and the first encounters with the walkers take place. Rick sets out to find his family, and begins to form bonds with strangers who will later become part of the same group of survivors.
So much so that the bond with these strangers grows stronger and stronger and they form a group of friends, which later becomes a big family.
Over the years, the survivors, led by Rick, go through a series of events that will make them stronger and stronger, although they have suffered the loss of several members of the group, from zombie attacks to confrontations with other hostile groups.
As the story progresses, the group finds different shelters, which appear to be an oasis amidst the general chaos, but different circumstances force them to relocate again and again. This is how new enemies appear on the scene, who try to use force and ultra-violent methods to seize the scarce resources the group possesses, or even take over the shelters that Rick and his family have managed to create.
But just as hostile encounters arise, new allies join the group of survivors and bring new strength to the settlement. New bonds will be formed, couples and even births, and even former enemies will become allies.
What is remarkable about the script is how the story manages to generate suspense and tension during several chapters, combining chases by the zombies, heart-rending attacks where the walkers devour alive the people who do not manage to escape, armed confrontations between the different groups using different types of bladed weapons and firearms (even with a war tank), endless hordes of zombies that destroy everything in their path, and the encounter with new communities.

Luego de un tiempo, Rick despierta del coma y se encuentra con un panorama desolador. El hospital abandonado, cientos de muertos en el edificio, desorientado, y sin entender que sucedía.
Al pasar el tiempo, comprende la nueva realidad y se producen los primeros encuentros con los caminantes. Rick se propone encontrar a su familia, y comienza a formar lazos con desconocidos que luego formarán parte del mismo grupo de sobrevivientes.
Tal es así, que el vínculo con estos extraños se vuelve cada vez más fuerte y conforman un grupo de amigos, que posteriormente se transforma en una gran familia.
A través del paso de los años, los sobrevivientes liderados por Rick, atraviesan una serie de acontecimientos que los harán cada vez más fuertes, aunque sin antes haber sufrido la pérdida de varios miembros del grupo, ya sea por ataques de zombies, hasta enfrentamientos con otros grupos hostiles.
A medida que la historia avanza, el grupo encuentra diferentes refugios, que aparentan ser un oasis entre el caos generalizado, pero diferentes circunstancias los obligan a relocalizarse una y otra vez. Es así como aparecen en escena nuevos enemigos que intentan a través de la fuerza y métodos ultra violentos, apoderarse de los escasos recursos que posee el grupo, o incluso apropiarse de los refugios que Rick y su familia han logrado crear.
Pero así como surgen encuentros hostiles, también aparecen nuevos aliados que se suman al grupo de sobrevivientes y que aportarán nuevas fuerzas al asentamiento. Nuevos vínculos se formarán, parejas e incluso nacimientos, y hasta antiguos enemigos se convertirán en aliados.
Lo destacable del guión, es como la historia logra generar suspenso y tensión durante varios capítulos, combinando persecuciones por parte de los zombies, ataques desgarradores donde los caminantes devoran vivas a las personas que no logran escapar, enfrentamientos armados entre los diferentes grupos que utilizan distintos tipos de armas blancas y de fuego (incluso con un tanque de guerra), hordas interminables de zombies que arrasan con todo a su paso, y el encuentro con nuevas comunidades.

The Walking Dead is a decidedly long-running series, at least one more will follow season nine. Overall I appreciate it, I like the horror on offer, some characters are well characterised - others less so - and there is no lack of suspense. The characters alternate except for a few fixed presences that the audience, including myself, is fond of. However, the quality of the seasons and individual episodes varies, probably due to both the script and the change of director.
In fact, these series have more and more directors directing them, and not all of them show the same talent. But most of the shortcomings of the series, which could be more gripping, lie in its repetitiveness on the one hand, and, on the other, in having diminished the role of the zombies at times over the course of the seasons.
After all, those who watch the series do so at least in part for the horror element. In fact, in many episodes of the later seasons, they are only secondary elements, and with an attenuated noxiousness compared to the lethal ones of the earlier episodes.
The Walking Dead es una serie decididamente longeva, al menos una más seguirá a la novena temporada. En general lo aprecio, me gusta el terror propuesto, algunos personajes están bien caracterizados -otros no tanto- y no falta el suspense.
