ছবিতে মাথার দুটি প্রতিকৃতি রয়েছে, তবে ডানপাশেরটিকে বাজারজাতকৃত সবচেয়ে কালো বস্তু Vantablack দিয়ে আবরণ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
কোনো বস্তু হতে আলো আমাদের চোখে এসে পড়লে সেই বস্তুটি আমরা দেখি। কখনো কখনো বস্তু নিজেই আলো নিঃসরণ করে, আর কখনো আলোক উৎস থেকে আলো বস্তুতে প্রতিফলিত হয়ে আমাদের চোখে আসলে আমরা সেই বস্তু দেখি। আর কালো মানে হচ্ছে রং তথা আলোর অনুপস্থিতি। কালো বস্তু আলো শোষন করে নেয় বলে আমরা সেই বস্তুটিকে কালো তথা অন্ধকার দেখি। কিন্তু পৃথিবীর কোনো বস্তুই পুরোপুরি কালো নয়, অর্থাৎ আলো পুরোপুরি শোষন করতে পারে না, সামান্য কিছু প্রতিফলিত করে। তাই কালো বস্তুর পৃষ্ঠের গড়ন বুঝতেও আমাদের সমস্যা হয় না। কয়লা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে কালো বস্তুগুলোর একটি যা প্রায় ৯৬% আলো শোষণ করে আর বাকী ৪% আলো প্রতিফলন করে। একটুকরো কয়লা হাতে নিলে এর পৃষ্ঠের বন্ধুরতা আমরা চোখে দেখেই বুঝতে পারব।
কিন্তু Vantablack ৯৯.৯৬% আলো শোষণ করে, অর্থাৎ প্র্যাকটিক্যালি এর মধ্য থেকে কোনো আলো প্রতিফলিত হয় না। তাই এর দিকে তাকালে কেবল অন্ধকারই মনে হয়। এই কারণে প্রতিকৃতির মুখবৈশিষ্ট্যগুলো কিছুই বোঝা যাচ্ছে না। কোনো বস্তুর উপর এটি স্প্রে করে দিলে একটা নিকষ কালো গহ্বর ছাড়া আর কিছুই মনে হবে না।
Vantablack তৈরি করা হয়েছে কার্বন ন্যানোটিউব দিয়ে। বিভিন্ন আলোকযন্ত্রে যত্রতত্র প্রতিফলনে প্রতিবিম্বের মান হ্রাস পায়, তাই সেসব কোটিংয়ের জন্য এই বস্তুটি কাজে আসে। তাছাড়া মিলিটারি ক্ষেত্রে এবং নানাধরনের গবেষণার ক্ষেত্রে এর ব্যাবহার রয়েছে।
