A company called Colossal Biosciences is working to raise the wooly mammoth, dodo bird and the Tasmania Devil. Our resources are being used to de-extinct these creatures by taking their genome and injecting it into their extant cousins.
Wow, have they not seen Jurassic Park? We hunted the dodo bird and the wooly mammoth to extinction because they were good sources of food. We went big wild in our past history and now we are going to expend resources and technology to bring them back to a period of rapid extinction and ecosystem decay for investors to salivate. We will likely dip into cloning and eventually human cloning as our world nears 8 billion people. Why not focus on our current predicament?
Think about the ethical considerations here. We killed these animals and now we are bringing them back to life. Hopefully we won't kill them again as the world's ecosystems collapse. We are bringing them into a period of prolonged extinction. This is the sixth period of mass extinction, and we're going to drop them into it.
We need to wake up and see that we have a world with living animals we need to take care of. Let's spend the money to conserve our resources and our living endangered animals.
