Online Transactions Fraud at a Rise

in scams •  2 years ago

It's the world of online and with that the online crimes are also at an increase. Every few days we keep hearing of some or the other type of fraud, related to banking, shopping, bill payments, reward schemes, jobs and what not. Some time back a friend of mine was desperately looking for a job and in the same time she received a message saying make a deposit of 5000 Rs and start with online jobs. She sent the money and then it was gone forever without any job coming to her. These are very regular ones and we all know of them, but the thing is, in times of desperation we want to take a chance on any opportunity that comes through to us. Fact is that you cannot even take chances with these type of messages because they are such clear frauds.

Many years back even once I got carried away with such one message. I was in desperation need of finance and in that time I received one email mentioning that I had won some lottery and they asked me to provide my bank details to send the amount. I was almost sending it and just before that thank my lucky stars I spoke to my hubby and he blasted me saying how could I behave so dumb. In those days people were not much aware of the banking frauds and the phone use was very limited, awareness of these kind of frauds was not there and anyone could get carried away. But now there is lot of awareness and people should be extremely careful about sharing any of their details to anyone.

The other common fraud is about some big wins where you are asked to click on a link. It is advisable to not click on any links or share any information about personal details. Even the Apps that we download we need to be careful and not download too many unnecessary Apps because when we download them they ask for our permission to access our contact list or photo gallery, if we do not accept then we cannot move forward. There is a risk in that because we have no way to authenticate how genuine that App provider is and what level of confidentiality is maintained by them.

The older people get easily trapped into these scams because they are not very technology savvy. My mom keeps showing me her messages that she gets and most of them are all scammers. We have given her strict instructions to not click on anything without our advice. She feels that every message that comes on her phone some action has to be taken. Nowadays the PIN is also not required while making transactions with your card which again makes it very vulnerable. If the card is lost then anyone can easily use it and all your money is gone. Best is to set limits on every way your card is used. So if lost then you can minimalize the damage. Whenever I want to use it big I change the limits and after the use again set them up to minimal.

While Technology has it's own benefits, it also brings some disadvantages. One has to be very careful. As the frauds keep getting exposed, new one comes in which people are not aware of and sometimes they feel so genuine that it is easy to get caught into it.
