Uncharted Waters was the first in a series of games with that title released by KOEI. It is a sort of simulation/strategy/role-playing game themed around the Age of Discovery. In terms of gameplay and theme it has been compared to Sid Meier's Pirates! but it never achieved that popularity, at least in North America. Only the first two games in the series were released in the U.S. but there were several more games in the series as it was much more popular in Asia. Uncharted Waters was first released for the NES (and MSX) in 1991 and then the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo the following year. It was also ported to the PC and Macintosh.
