The ad says "The Greatest Sports Games Are From Tecmo" and for a long time that was probably true. However, this ad was from a time when that was starting to not be so true anymore. I always though Tecmo Bowl on the original Nintendo was the best football game and perhaps the best action sports game up to that point. I am not as familiar with what the best basketball games were but by 1994, when this ad for Tecmo Super Bowl (and Tecmo Super NBA Basketball) appeared, the Madden line of football games had eclipsed Tecmo in terms of popularity.

The Madden line of football games started on various home computers in 1988 with John Madden Football. An updated version was released in 1990 for The Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and Amiga. John Madden Football '92 was released in 1991 along with John Madden Football II for MS-DOS computers and there has been a new version every year since, though a slight name change occured along the way and it is now known as Madden NFL.
