Men and women alike, however, are receptive to dating someone ten to fifteen years younger or older, even if they choose someone who is their age in personal relationships. All civilizations exhibit the age-gap pair phenomena, even though the magnitude of the distinction in age-gap couples varies. The average age difference in some non-Western nations is significantly greater than in Western nations. For instance, over 30% of unions in some African nations show a significant age difference. So, is age a factor? Do couples with significant age differences have worse (or better) relationship results than couples of similar age?

Most people will probably partner with someone their own age. This is mostly related to being drawn to people who are similar to you and having social groups that often consist of peers in comparable ages. A person's personality, interests, and values, as well as their life objectives, point in life, and physical characteristics—age is only a marker for physical appearance—are all examples of what makes two people similar.

According to this viewpoint, there is a relationship between reproductive fitness and men's choices for younger women and women's desires for older men. This is a measure of a person's "good genes," which are demonstrated by their beauty and vitality, and their suitability as an investment, which is demonstrated by their resources and status in addition to their friendliness and sense of trustworthiness.

While warmth and trustworthiness are important qualities in a partner, women prioritize a man's position and wealth more than men do. This is mostly due to the fact that women bear children, which means they have to invest a lot of time and energy in carrying and raising children. As a result, they are aware of the need to find a partner who is prepared to put money into a marriage and a family.

However, as accumulating resources takes time and energy, we often start doing so later in life, meaning that by the time we have sufficient resources and cash to comfortably hold others, we are usually older. Therefore, some women's attraction to older males may be explained by their awareness of status and resources.

On the other hand, there is data that suggests men place a higher value on attractiveness and vitality than do women since, in terms of evolution, youth is regarded as a sign of fecundity. Because men are incapable of becoming parents, evolutionarily speaking, they are attracted to younger women in order to increase their chances of forming a partnership with a child-bearing spouse.

However, the evolutionary argument has limitations because it is unable to explain why age disparities exist in same-sex relationships or why the opposite scenario occurs—a younger man paired with an older woman. Sociocultural explanations could provide light on this.

Women are no longer as dependent on men for finances because there are more of them working, holding higher positions, and earning more money. Thus, when seeking for a partner, less women will prioritize their riches.
