I was kidding. This is not financial advice.
What is Going On?
Well not shut down, but all of the major subreddits are not operating in protest. It is what they call “going black” for two days – the 12th and 13th of June. I think it was in response to Reddit changing the API through which all sub-Reddits connect to Reddit and the subsequent increase in charges.
That’s more or less what this article is about, but curious about the way it is affecting most. It does affect me in some way, so let’s see how.
What Is The Impact?
Well, I used to interact with several subreddits and a few of them, namely, r/cryptocurrency and r/formula1 have gone dark. That means, while I can see the other posts, I can neither post nor interact. Surprisingly, the “going black” thing is not for everyone within the subreddit, as I can indeed see few posts. Well, I will have to wait till the 14th of June to find out what this is all about.
What is surprising is that Reddit would come up with such measures, especially, when it has such a huge number of communities across areas that you can think of. Why would they pi** off so many of the communities? Many of them have a burgeoning population of active users from across the globe.
We can only guess at the moment.
What’s My Best Guess?
Numerous conspiracy theories are doing the rounds, but I suspect this has to do with Reddit planning its IPO. It seems to be clearing the house to qualify for the IPO, especially since the governing body SEC has its own opinion (or dislike) for crypto. But then again, crypto is just one community, Reddit has so many more.
I think, at the moment, we can only guess. I will wait till the 14th of June to check what happens. I will genuinely miss the community if it does go down from here.
Either way, let’s continue hoping for the best.
