We are living in a world where technology is evolving every day. If we ask our grandparents or even our parents, they see a stark contrast when comparing the tech we are using today with the technology of their time. AI, Web3, and social media are now part of our daily lives. We use them in our day-to-day activities, and life without them seems too boring. There are many who cannot imagine their lives without social media; some of them are online for more than 12 hours a day, living their lives on social media. Accessibility to the internet has played a very important role in the growth of social media. Social media does not exist without the internet.

Initially, people thought that social media was a way to connect with each other using the internet, as it is very fast and convenient. In the old days, people used to write letters to communicate information. I remember the days of my childhood when the postman would come to our door and deliver letters. Nowadays, it's very rare.

In today's time, social media is not just a means of connecting with each other; it is more than that and has also become a way of conducting business. The focus on connecting with others has shifted towards business-centric interactions. It's not just about sharing pictures or updating statuses; companies or businesses post information about their products and services, using it as a medium to attract more people and ultimately expand their reach to more customers. I belong to a village (it's true, though now I am living in a city) and would like to share a story about a business I know of that created an online presence using social media more than their offline business.

People love to purchase what they like, and the jewelry business is one where customers are attracted more by the design and appearance of the jewelry. There is one family in our village that has been in the jewelry business for decades. They are doing quite well, but expanding their business is the first priority of every businessman. Their two sons were very active on social media and started using it as a medium for doing business. They began publishing their designs on social media (Instagram). Along with their designs, they created videos of deliveries they made to their customers and shared them on social media. I was not aware of this until one day I received a call from them saying they were visiting Maharashtra (which is almost 2000 km away from my village) to make a delivery to one of their customers. I checked their account and was amazed to see that millions of people were following them. I saw some pictures of them delivering jewelry to some celebrities as well, and that was all because of their reach on social media. There are many more stories around us where people use social media to grow and establish their businesses.

Social media, no doubt, has brought about significant changes in people's lives, with both positive and negative effects. I have seen many people who are online 24 hours a day, wasting their time just watching videos and doing nothing. Anything in excess has negative effects, and the addiction to using social media is one big negative effect on our lives. Social media is a good tool if used wisely, but there are many people using it to spread false news and create chaos. Sometimes, these news stories become the reason for riots in some cases. It all depends on how humans use the tools, for good or for bad purposes.
