Green Hydrogen- A Truly Clean Energy Source

The world continues to need and seek green-energy technologies. It's a huge business and it has the ability to positively impact billions around the globe. But, we need to avoid green-washing and producing "green" technologies dependent upon waste and hazardous processes. Green hydrogen fits the bill of a green technology that is powered by green sources.

Hydrogen gas, which is liberated when water through a process called electrolysis, is clean burning and can be stored and transported in fuel cells. The issue with electrolysis is that the required energy to break water is often created by dirty energy sources including the burning of coal and other fossil fuels.

“Green hydrogen” is a clean energy source derived from electrolysis that is performed with energy produced by other green-energy sources. Green hydrogen is playing a role in Africa’s green-energy production portfolio and is a true clean energy source, and is only 0.1% of the hydrogen produced. Green hydrogen can be mixed with other fuel gasses and can help bolster green-energy sources like solar panels that rely upon sunlight.

Green hydrogen raises the philosophical need for green energy technologies to actually be green. Solar panels are made with toxic and flammable chemicals and electric vehicles’ batteries are made with lithium which is mined in a way that damages the environment. We need to make the next generation of clean-energy solutions fully green, and the focus on using renewable energy to make green hydrogen gas is a great step.

I have written about green hydrogen before, and am a huge fan of the technology. Green hydrogen is a bridge between fossil fuels and fusion power. The future of our world depends upon green-technologies that are actually green and sustainable.
