Matt.15.15 - Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
Matt.15.16 - And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
Matt.15.17 - Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
Matt.15.18 - But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
Matt.15.19 - For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Matt.15.20 - These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. (Matthew 15:15-20)
“There is no sin in word or deed which was not first in the heart.” Matthew Henry. Every day, we make innumerable choices. Some we contemplate and some we make without much thought, but none are made contrary to the decision of our heart.
The words we speak are sometimes careless, but they are always an extension of what we have stored up within our minds and our feelings. Do we sometimes say things without thinking? Far too often, and usually I end up regretting those words almost as soon as they pass my lips. Inevitably though, the words I speak without putting much thought to them, show what I secretly feel.

Have you ever believed, like Peter who claimed he would never deny Christ, that you would always make the right decision when push came to shove? If you have, as I have, you most likely found that, like Peter, our words melted into cowardice when we needed them the most. Our words can be much bolder than we are.
Unfortunately, the truth comes out eventually. We are a work in progress. Though we want desperately to be the perfect model of Christ, we are far from perfection. Our heart is, well, as Jeremiah declared,
“… deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

Matthew Henry continued his sermon on the deception of the heart by saying, “The heart, the conscience of man, in his corrupt and fallen state, is deceitful above all things. It calls evil good, and good evil; and cries peace to those to whom it does not belong. Herein the heart is desperately wicked; it is deadly; it is desperate… We cannot know our own hearts, nor what they will do in an hour of temptation. Who can understand his errors? Much less can we know the hearts of others, or depend upon them.” Jesus claimed that what comes from our heart defiles us.
Our motives begin in our thoughts and desires. This is why it is so important that we align those thoughts and desires with God’s will. We cannot fool God. Jeremiah 17:10 continues,
“I the Lord search the mind and try the heart, to give to every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”
The heart is the core of a person. It is where we decide right from wrong. It is where we formulate our plans and build the perfect response. It is also where we daydream of things we would never do in ‘real life’, where we lust, where we plot, where we assume, and where every evil inclination of mankind can be found.
This is where sin begins, and this is where Christ wins his most important battles. Anytime we choose to stop thinking of something sinful and turn our thoughts to prayer, God wins. Every time we rebuke our own thoughts and use the scripture we have planted in our minds to combat the lies and temptations of the enemy, God wins.
“Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
The dirt that resides on the outside doesn’t make us clean or unclean. The condition of our homes or our clothes say nothing about the condition of our souls. God searches the heart. He reads the mind and weighs our thoughts because what hides in there maketh the man.

Mat.15.16 - Y Jesús dijo: ¿También vosotros estáis todavía sin entendimiento?
Mat.15.17 - ¿Aún no entendéis que todo lo que entra por la boca va al vientre, y se echa fuera en la corriente?
Mat.15.18 - Pero lo que sale de la boca, del corazón sale; y contaminan al hombre.
Mat.15.19 - Porque del corazón salen los malos pensamientos, los homicidios, los adulterios, las fornicaciones, los hurtos, los falsos testimonios, las blasfemias:
Mat.15.20 - Estas son las cosas que contaminan al hombre: pero comer con las manos sin lavar no contamina al hombre. (Mateo 15:15-20)
“No hay pecado de palabra o de obra que no haya sido primero en el corazón”. Mateo Henry. Todos los días, hacemos innumerables elecciones. Algunas las contemplamos y otras las hacemos sin pensarlo mucho, pero ninguna es contraria a la decisión de nuestro corazón.
Las palabras que decimos a veces son descuidadas, pero siempre son una extensión de lo que hemos almacenado en nuestra mente y nuestros sentimientos. ¿A veces decimos cosas sin pensar? Con demasiada frecuencia, y por lo general termino arrepintiéndome de esas palabras casi tan pronto como pasan por mis labios. Sin embargo, inevitablemente, las palabras que hablo sin pensar mucho en ellas, muestran lo que siento en secreto.

¿Alguna vez has creído, como Pedro que afirmó que nunca negaría a Cristo, que siempre tomarías la decisión correcta cuando llegara el momento? Si es así, como yo, lo más probable es que haya descubierto que, al igual que Peter, nuestras palabras se convirtieron en cobardía cuando más las necesitábamos. Nuestras palabras pueden ser mucho más audaces que nosotros.
Desafortunadamente, la verdad sale a la luz eventualmente. Somos un trabajo en progreso. Aunque deseamos desesperadamente ser el modelo perfecto de Cristo, estamos lejos de la perfección. Nuestro corazón es, bueno, como declaró Jeremías,
“… engañoso sobre todas las cosas, y desesperadamente corrupto; ¿Quién puede entenderlo? (Jeremías 17:9)

Matthew Henry continuó su sermón sobre el engaño del corazón diciendo: “El corazón, la conciencia del hombre, en su estado corrupto y caído, es más engañoso que todas las cosas. Llama bien al mal, y mal al bien; y clama paz a aquellos a quienes no pertenece. Aquí el corazón es desesperadamente perverso; es mortal; es desesperante... No podemos conocer nuestro propio corazón, ni lo que hará en la hora de la tentación. ¿Quién puede comprender sus errores? Mucho menos podemos conocer los corazones de los demás, o depender de ellos.” Jesús afirmó que lo que sale de nuestro corazón nos contamina.
Nuestros motivos comienzan en nuestros pensamientos y deseos. Por eso es tan importante que alineemos esos pensamientos y deseos con la voluntad de Dios. No podemos engañar a Dios. Jeremías 17:10 continúa,
“Yo, el Señor, escudriño la mente y pruebo el corazón, para dar a cada uno según sus caminos, según el fruto de sus obras”.
El corazón es el núcleo de una persona. Es donde decidimos el bien del mal. Es donde formulamos nuestros planes y construimos la respuesta perfecta. También es donde soñamos despiertos con cosas que nunca haríamos en la "vida real", donde deseamos, donde conspiramos, donde asumimos y donde se pueden encontrar todas las inclinaciones malignas de la humanidad.
Aquí es donde comienza el pecado, y aquí es donde Cristo gana sus batallas más importantes. Cada vez que elegimos dejar de pensar en algo pecaminoso y convertir nuestros pensamientos en oración, Dios gana. Cada vez que reprendemos nuestros propios pensamientos y usamos la escritura que hemos plantado en nuestra mente para combatir las mentiras y tentaciones del enemigo, Dios gana.
“No os conforméis a este mundo, sino transformaos mediante la renovación de vuestra mente, para que comprobéis cuál es la voluntad de Dios, lo que es bueno, aceptable y perfecto”. (Romanos 12:2)
La suciedad que reside en el exterior no nos hace limpios o inmundos. La condición de nuestros hogares o nuestra ropa no dice nada sobre la condición de nuestras almas. Dios escudriña el corazón. Él lee la mente y pesa nuestros pensamientos porque lo que allí se esconde hace al hombre.
