It is remarkable how forgetful humans can be. Occasionally we neglect what we intended to say before the words even leave our mouths, and we forget significant events like birthdays or anniversaries, as well as where we put our car keys! To counter this, we establish rituals and habits, use our phones to remind us, and attach post-it notes to the bathroom mirror or garage door. We create life rhythms that help us in living the life we desire because we don't want to forget it.

In my experience, people rarely consciously and purposefully decide to cease following Jesus in their lives of religion. Indeed, this does occasionally occur, with people reading or researching their way into unbelief and becoming fervent agnostic or atheist missionaries. But the majority of the time, losing one's faith is a much more slow, subtle, and sneaky process. One of the most well-tried and tested strategies in the wicked one's arsenal is the protracted break from strong and enduring faith.

We must hear and heed the words of Proverbs 3 as the Lord speaks to us directly now in order to fight this. Remember what the Lord has taught you, and remember his precepts in your heart. Naturally, this adage raises another query: what are the Lord's commands? Here, we can recall what our Lord Jesus said in Mark 12:29–31 when he was asked which command was the most important.

Recalling the teachings of the Lord is an ongoing communion of love rather than merely recalling facts. Our daily transformation into the likeness of the Lord via the indwelling of his Spirit is the foundation for our capacity to obey his commands. As we develop a daily prayer habit—not out of necessity or duty, but as a reaction of appreciation for the love we know in Christ—we stop the tide of apathy. A changed heart is the source of obedience. Refocus your attention on a daily routine that prioritizes God and a heart that is aware of his presence. Everything else comes into place after we accomplish this.
