Skills are at a premium in today’s world. We need to highlight the absolute importance of building, honing and improving skills in our population and community.

Take inventory of your skills. What do you know how to do that is concrete, and produces a marketable product or service? What are your natural skills and strengths that you can employ? What skills can you add to your arsenal of existing skills to bolster your acuity?

Personally, I am working to increase my gardening, plumbing and handyman skills. In order to be effective in these areas, I needed to get physically fit and I needed to learn some basics. I also needed to read books and websites about the nuances of these skills and then practice them. It’s an ongoing process that never stops, and you need to frame it as a marathon, like life tends to be.

We may be heading into a recession, so now is a good time to build up your skills. Often times, skills including concrete skills you need to survive and thrive are practiced by craftsmen in your area. Building community is something I have been working on in 2023, and this has helped me to uncover individuals who know how to fix things and build things in my community. A car mechanic a few neighborhoods over has shown me some fixes I can employ, and in return we have helped him establish a garden. This is a win-win for us, and shows how transferrable skills form a foundation in communities.

Your children should be learning skills as well. Teach them skills you know well and enroll them in scouts, martial arts and shop classes so they can learn skills from a young age when their minds are most receptive to learning. Children should also learn how to cook and clean for themselves and how to manage their money effectively, as these are practical but uncommon skills in today’s world. Pass it on so they can succeed as adults.

Thanks for reading my blog. I appreciate the community here and want to add quality content.
