TOPIC: GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH
📖 TODAY'S TEXT:
Psalm 46:1-3
🔑 KEY VERSE:
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).
🖊️ COMMENTARY
The Psalmist from experience lists three things God is to us: He is our Reruge, our Strength and a Very Present help in trouble.
Senaccherib made a siege on Jerusalem. He so trusted in his military exploits that he believed nobody would deliver Judah from his hand. God came into the scene, Senaccherib never shot any arrow on Jerusalem but 185,000 of his soldiers were killed by an angel in one night and his children murdered him in front of his idols when he went to inquire why such a shameful defeat.
Indeed, God is our refuge. Places of security have all failed.
Everywhere is vulnerable. No real hiding place except in God. When King Jehoiakim of Judah came out in full force to arrest Jeremiah and Baruch his scribe, the Lord hid them (Jeremiah 36:26). Make the Lord your hiding place for when He hides you, no evil eye can see you.
God is our strength (Ex. 15:2) and He also gives strength to His people (Psalm 29:11). The strength of Goliath failed him in the war front but God gave strength to the weak David. The head of the giant rolled at the feet of the small David. So shall He give you the strength to do exploits.
God is our Very Present Help in trouble. David fell severally into the hand of King Saul who was after his life, but God delivered him from each of them. Let the earth be moved and the mountains carried into the sea; do not be afraid. In the midst of insecurity in the land, God is our sure hiding place. Run into His chamber and sleep for, "He who watches over lsrael will neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:4).
