TOPIC: TRAIN YOUR CHILD WELL
📖 TODAY'S TEXT:
1 Samuel 2:12-36

"Train up a child in the way he should go..." (Proverbs 22:6).
🖊️ COMMENTARY
According to Oxford Advanced Learners' Dictionary, "a child is a young human who is not an adult." J.D. Okolo (1998.85) defines training as a process where a trainer prepares a learner (trainee) for desired performance by specific routine practice or exercise. Good training is not crisis management. It is what you do before the crisis arises.
A story was told of a man whose son came home one evening and met the father outside at the balcony of his two story building enjoying the cool breeze of the evening. The son demanded for a huge sum of money which he told him he could not afford. Just as the father was trying to make him understand, he pushed the father from the balcony and he fell
and died.
Some parenting is reactionary rather than deliberate. Imagine building a house that way. To neglect deliberate training is to show your child into a sea of choices and passion without a boat of compass. The emphasis here is on training of a child before the need for discipline arises. Some parents never attempt to train their children to obey. They wait until the behavior becomes unbearable and then explode.
The story said the young man's father was fond of giving him money when he was just a child, and when he grew up the money was no longer coming as before hence the anger against his father.
With proper training discipline can be reduced, no more raised voices, no contention, no bad attitudes, fewer spankings, cheerful atmosphere in the home and obedience from children. According to John Lockie, "The heart of a child is a tabula rasa" that is, a clean slate. Therefore, it behooves the parents to write godly inscriptions on their hearts, through teaching and instructions. Such instructions may be moral values, ethnic issues as the case may be.
