Joshua 5:13-15

Many times in our lives, we tend to assume the driver's seat and affirm that we are in charge of our destinies. But, there is so much we can learn from the life of Joshua especially at this time of the year. Joshua was preparing his troops for the battle of Jericho. Of course, he had no way of knowing how God was going to cause the walls to come crashing down. He went purely by faith.

It is instructive to note first of all, Joshua separated himself from the rest of the people, most certainly for a time of reflection and seeking direction. As he waited, a man came up to Joshua and identified himself as "commander of the army of the Lord." Joshua immediately fell face down in reverence and asked, "What message does my Lord have for His servant?"

Even though Joshua was a great warrior who was in charge of leading all of the people of Israel, he knew who was in charge and called himself a servant of the Lord. What a wonderful example for us: to put aside our own agenda and pre-determined ideas about the next course of action and ask, "What would the Lord have me do?" There and then Joshua got the strategy for taking over Jericho. The same experience shall be ours if we can learn to separate ourselves and seek divine direction.
