The term "Devotion or Khidmah" is not something strange among Islamic students, especially those who live in Islamic boarding schools. The problem is, the benefits of service are still doubted by some people and Islamic boarding school guardians, and many people even think that service lowers a person's status and is a despicable job. It's different for someone who knows the importance of devotion, they believe devotion has magical powers. For the students themselves, devotion or service is a "pleasure" and some even consider it an obligation.
No matter how small, a service that we do with sincerity will be a reward that was never expected before. Devotion is also a way for us to achieve blessings from the teacher. There are many stories about the dedication of a student while still at an Islamic boarding school, they achieved success thanks to their dedication.
Several stories of the success of a santri due to his dedication include: there was a santri who was on duty every morning to throw away a container filled with water that had been mixed with the kiai's saliva (coughing). At first it felt ticklish because I wasn't used to it, not to mention that if you stepped on the water mixed with saliva it would feel slippery on your feet. After some time, the student told his father that the kiai had given him the task of cleaning a container mixed with saliva. It turned out that the father was happy with his son's activities. "Well, you are lucky, not all students have the opportunity to become a khadam (servant) for a kiai who is sick. According to health science, coughs are easily transmitted. Are you coughing? No!!! You can prove that blessing is greater than knowledge, it is one of the blessings of your devotion. Continue to serve," said his father.
In addition, intelligent students are usually synonymous with frequently reading books and memorizing frequently. Not with this student, it turns out that apart from studying, every time he has free time at the cottage he is in the public kitchen to serve his teacher's guests. So, when is it time for him to study? It turned out that he studied in class by remembering what the teacher said in class and when it was quiet at night. Today's lesson, which was difficult, was repeated at night, when his friends were fast asleep, just for a moment. Proudly, who taught you to be like this? It turned out that his parents also supported him. The father only gave advice when he was in class so that he could study seriously so that when he was at the cottage he could serve and not need to study anymore, maybe just repeating it at midnight. However, the blessing of a teacher and parent is extraordinary. Thank God his grades can be ranked first or second per semester, sometimes he takes express classes, meaning in one year he can skip two classes.
The story is again, there were students who previously only worked as cooks and received guests from caregivers, but it turns out that when they continued their education, whether at high school or college level, they were often asked to be in the food section or receive guests, and often they were even in the prayer section, active in teaching and education. .
There are other students who serve as flower buyers to place on the dhelem beds (the name for the kiai's house). Every afternoon these students walk to the market just to buy roses, jasmine flowers, tuberose flowers and yellow kantil flowers and then ronde them in the model that Nyai's mother likes. That was his routine activity every afternoon for two years. After completing his education at the Islamic boarding school, it turned out that this knowledge was needed by the local community, for example to do make-up for manten. As a result, she became a make-up artist who was loved by many customers because in the past her mother also taught her practices in the Koran, namely several verses from Surah Yusuf.
Apart from that, serving can also bring us closer to our teachers. Through wasilah, you can curl and thicken your eyelashes, so you can get close and stay in touch with your teacher. For example, his teacher's son and daughter needed his expertise when he was at school. Not only was he close to the teacher, but he also pleased the teacher.
There are still many stories of students who have received sweet fruit from their service. There are many lessons and wisdom that we can learn together. So, it is not a guarantee that smart people will be successful and their blessings will flow. Sometimes what is ordinary, but provides a lot of service is what the community needs. They become useful in society because they have been trained in sengko dawuh (following the teacher's words and being ready to carry them out).
There are still lots of wasilah and ways, as long as it is imprinted in our hearts, we are willing to do it then it will be blessed. There are many ways to seek blessings, as long as we are sincere then when we return to society we will feel the powerful effects of devotion.
