As you know I am from Honduras and we are involved in the CONCACAF final 8 round that qualifies three teams directly to the Qatar Football World Cup next year, and also one additional spot to be disputed with a team from another confederation.
After a very promising start against Canada with whom we drew in Montreal 1-1 we have been on a downhill path since then. First we tied against El Salvador 0-0 in El Salvador, then we lost 1-4 against the USA in Honduras and we also drew here against Costa Rica 0-0.
The first thing I notice is our attack is nearly useless two goals in four games and one of them a penalty. Then we have lost 5 points at home, a terrible result for us. On the other hand we did get two points from our away games, maybe we should play all our games away from Honduras.
Regardless of this I think we have lost our real aims and logical aspirations. Mexico and USA will probably take first and second place, we have to fight for that third place, but it is starting to look a very distant goal, especially as we play against Mexico tomorrow, in Mexico.
Looking at things dispassionately, I think Canada will take that third spot so we can actually just aspire to that extra game against a team from another confederation. This is reasonable, Mexico, USA and Canada have players who play in top teams in Europe, we have a couple playing in second division in Portugal, one in Ligue 1 in France who has played there for about twenty minutes and a few playing in MLS, oh and one playing in Angola.
Plus our coach who is from Uruguay seems to have a funny way to look at things, the team played great against Canada, then he made 9 changes against El Salvador actually looking for a point instead of going for the offensive looking for a win. The excuse? Resting our best players for our game against USA. Then when the USA beat us, he said it was logical because of all the players they have in top European teams. Which begs the question, why not try to beat El Salvador who is a direct rival and not pretend we are going to try to beat the USA.
I feel frustrated and have quit watching the Honduras games, I will not be bothered by them any more. Suffice it to say we are seventh, with only Jamaica having less points, but at least Jamaica are playing well and have just had bad luck.
