INTRODUCTION
We may have noticed particularly during Easter season that there is a constant use of the word ALLEUIA. What does it mean anyway, and why is it so closely associated with the season of Easter?
WHAT DOES ALLELUIA MEAN?
The word Alleluia comes to us from Hebrew, and it means "praise Yahweh."
ORIGIN OF THE ALLELUIA
Historically speaking, of course, the word Alleluia does mean something. It is after all used in the Old Testament, mostly in the psalms—a total of twenty-four times—particularly in what are called the Hallel Psalms, no. 113–150, which are chanted every Passover.
It comes from the Hebrew hallal-ujah, meaning “Praise YHWH.” But what then does that mean? What does it mean to praise? Praising is a response to first recognizing the goodness of God, and telling Him that He is good.
It is found most often as a type of antiphon that is repeated at the end of the Psalms. It is also found in the book of Tobit, where it is referenced as a hymn of praise to be sung in the new Jerusalem.
WHY DO CATHOLICS SAY ALLELUIA DURING EASTER AND OTHER TIMES?
Traditionally, the Alleluia has been seen as the chief term of praise of the choirs of angels, as theyworship around the throne of God in Heaven. It is, therefore, a term of great joy, and our use of the Alleluia during Mass is a way of participating in the angels' worship. It is also a reminder that the Kingdom of Heaven is already established on earth, in the form of the Church, and that our participation in Mass is a participation in Heaven.
More so, we sing Alleluia at Easter because of the new life, the divine life, we have received through Baptism. Easter is a period of great joy and exultation, and singing Alleluia is the Church’s way to highlight this reality, continually giving praise and honor to God.
The Alleluia is the third great symbol of the Easter liturgy. Different than light and water, Alleluia comes from our voices. Our joy in the promise of New Life comes from within ourselves and we ring out Alleluia
CONCLUSION
We have every reason to daily praise the Lord — and to daily sing with him Alleluia, for we are an Easter people and Alleuia is our song.
