Village Mela is one of the cultural traditions of rural Bengal. The fair brings a wave of joy in the gray, dreary and monotonous village life of the people. Once there was an abundance of grain production in the rural agricultural world. Festivals were an integral part of rural life. The contribution of science in the modern era has changed the way of life, but the spirit of festival has not disappeared from people's minds. It is through that way of organizing the festival that Gramyamala occupies its vast scope. And this fair carries the cultural heritage of Bengalis for thousands of years.
The literal meaning of the word Mela is meeting. Generally people of village area gather to celebrate different kinds of festivals at the beginning or end of the year or on a special day, it is called village mela. This village fair has been closely associated with the culture of Bangladesh since time immemorial. Bangladesh is basically a rural country. Most people of this country live in villages. So village fairs are very popular among the villagers.

Village people know in advance when the fair will be held. And according to that all kinds of preparations go on among the people of the village. The small boys and girls of the village collect money from their parents in advance to spend on the fair. Around the fair, artisans make various kinds of items. However, artisans focus more on making toys for little boys and girls to sell at fairs. Also, those who are the main organizers of the fair are also preparing long in advance. Volunteers are recruited to keep the fair grounds clean and orderly. The shopkeepers take the allotment of shops long in advance to set up shop in the fair. Also various preparations are made to entertain different types of guests coming to the fair.
Different types of fairs are held in different regions of Bangladesh. But these fairs do not require a specific place like a market. Fairs can be held at any open place. Usually the fair is held in the center of the village in the playground, temple premises, on the banks of the river or under the shade of a large tree. Fairs are organized in these places according to the eastern tradition. Tin sheds are often constructed in these places for setting up shops. However, these stalls were demolished after the end of the fair. The common fairs in Bangladesh last for a day, a week, fortnight and some for a month.
