Good morning, today would like to present post operative instructions after dental extraction during licensing exam such as MDCN exams, job seeking exams and so on.

MDCN exams was discussed a little bit in the previous post, interested readers can check it out. Without much ado let's go on to the scope of this post which post operative instructions given after extractions.

The presentation steps are as follows:
1- Introducing oneself to the examiner and mentioning the steps to be carried out.
Such as:

Good morning sir/ma, my name is so so and I want to give the post operative instructions to my patient that had just undergone dental extraction.

2- Make a scene of also introducing yourself to the patient even if the patient is not present. Take for instance saying it this way;

Good morning patient. My name is Doctor so and so. You just had a dental extraction done and there are some important instructions you must follow to avoid post operative complications..

3- Last but not least, you list the instructions in a logical and understandable manner to the patient. For example, it could be done in this scenario:
For today being the day of the extraction, you should avoid spitting out. Try and continue to swallow your saliva, so that you don't dislodge the blood clot on the tooth socket and you start bleeding again.

Moreover, you are not to engage in any strenuous activity or exercise because it can increase your blood pressure leading to vasoconstriction of the blood vessels which in turn cause bleeding from the extraction site.

Furthermore, you are to avoid smoking and alcohol because the increased temperature from the smoking can lead to bleeding and the alcohol can cause a delay wound healing.

Avoid using your tongue or finger or brush or toothpick to play with the extraction site because you can dislodge the blood clot from the socket and cause bleeding which may later leads to dry socket.

Avoid eating and drinking on extracted site. Also avoid eating spicy foods and hot foods and avoid anything that can irritate the extracted site.

Ensure that you commence your medications as soon as possible and as prescribed which may include antibiotics, painkillers, Ibuprofen an Nsaid and other appropriate medications

If you noticed any bleeding after extraction for some minutes or about 20mins, you can get a clean cotton wool or a clean white handkerchief. Place it in the extraction site and bite firmly oil for 30 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop after then, please get back to the hospital and medic in charge .

After 24 hours from the time of extraction, you can use of warm water and salt. You are to boil the water, then allow it to cool a bit, take a teaspoon of salt, level it won it and sip it in on the extracted site.

A gargle, but hold it on the external parts of the surgery I will some seconds then spit it out in reliability.

This should be done at least 8 times a day, for one week: first thing in the morning, before and after breakfast and repeatedly like that before bed.

Ensure you come back in one week to the clinian for a review and check up

For patients that develop swelling, it is advisable and necessary to use cold compress packs (get ice packs, wrap with a piece of cloth and place over the extraoral swelling for about 15 more minutes at intervals)

That's all as regards post operative instructions presentation for dental students.
