This story is about a family of three in one African village community. The father, mother and their only child. They were poor peasant farmers. The family was so much poverty laden and stricken. To eat two meals in a day was a luxury.
Eventually, evil struck against the family. There was an outbreak of a disease called colera that ravaged the whole community. So many people died as a result of the disease. It was the father of this child that died first. After few months the mother also died leaving the only child of the family behind.
The survival of the child now became a terrible issue. No one to take care of him. Eventually he decided to take to begging. He started begging from house to house. Sometimes he will beg and beg without receiving any assistance and so went about with empty stomach. Other times some people will treat him ruthlessly. The poverty became so terrible that the outlook of the boy started changing for lack of food. He was always in rags and bare footed most of the time. Occasionally he will go to any dustbin point and eat any edible material he could find.
When the situation became so unbearable, he started stealing to survive.
One day, luck ran against him as he stole from a petty trading shop. He was beaten almost to the point of coma and later taken to the nearby police station where he was locked up for further investigation. @pastormike
