We are what we make of our self. There is nothing in us that we cannot change, hence when someone says that I am like this only, I always tell them, You are like this because you want to be this. The moment you wish to change that side you will be easily able to do it. The personality we shape up for our self is a direct result of our thoughts. What we think and how we act, shapes us up. Most part of our personality also gets created unconsciously. When we get angry we lose the control of our mind. We act in an irrational manner and then people can tag us as a very unpleasant person. Getting angry is a totally unconscious act, if we become mindful of our emotion of anger and in a situation which triggers anger for us we bring in mindfulness and get in control of it, then our reaction will be different to the situation and our personality will be also coming out very differently.
Some traits we carry within us from our early childhood and we are not aware where the roots of them lie, but the moment we become conscious about our every action, we can change these traits and become a better person. That's what life is all about, become aware, become conscious and become a better version of our self with each experience of life. Else till such time we will keep revolving in the circle going through the same experiences.
If we keep doing the same thing the result will also be different. To get a better result, we need to change our actions and the change starts with us first changing our own thoughts and belief systems, becoming aware of what we are in the present and what we aim to become. If I want to become a better person, I cannot keep doing the same things which has kept me on lower frequencies, I need to rise and move up on the higher vibrational planes to improve myself and my life.
One of my ex boss once told me; becoming good is very easy, but the journey from good to great is where all the test of life will come and if we pass that we have truly crossed the most challenging barrier of our life which is getting the mind in control. The key to a healthy and full life is to keep moving forward and not get stuck in the rut.

I think you are misunderstanding the term 'personality', here. (it's referring to psychological traits).
I can't think of any academic perspective (in psychology) that doesn't agree Personality traits are hardwired in from the age of approximately 5 years old.
I think then, that you are referring to 'personality characteristics' in this post ?
(characteristics are expressed learned behaviors, not the underlying traits)
