Prospecting and Rock ID

in prospecting •  3 years ago

Hi Friends,

I was recently in Arizona near known gold bearing mountains and was able to find time to get a day of prospecting and hiking in. The terrain was rugged and the area was fairly remote so I didn't see another soul - thankfully no rattlesnakes this time!

Here are a couple of scenery shots:

I found a few rocks that were set off by my pinpointer but, after smashing most of them up, they are iron, copper or silver ores and were not gold bearing. I did find one interesting rock outcrop that I took some samples of and which I have not started smashing yet. Check them out:

There are millions of crystals on the inside of the rock outcropping and they shine amazingly in the sunlight. Reminds me of some geodes you can buy and break it up to find many crystals. I am not sure exactly what I am looking at, so any geologists here that have a guess would be appreciated!

I also found many of these cool quartz-like pieces:

They seem to be sort of melted and twisted, as if they formed when something got really hot. Very interesting and some shaped formations for sure. Any thoughts on what these are?

FOR SALE: For 50 Steem, I will mail you some of my rock samples (say around a pound worth; US shipping free, other countries we can chat about the cost). Hit me up on Discord if interested!

Thanks for coming by and checking out my prospecting hike!

Brian
