Indecisiveness. It's the inability to make a decision. And there are several reasons for me that I find myself at times totally indecisive. Sometimes, I have a lack of information and don't want to make an ill informed decision. At more serious times, I often have a small fear of making a bad choice and having to live with the negative consequences of that decision.Being
There are a lot of good resources online about making good choices. But I want to focus on not how to make good decisions. But rather, what to do when you find yourself unable to make any kind of decision.
Breathe (take a minute to relax and compose yourself)
Breathe. It seems almost patronizing. But taking a minute to relax can be one of the most important steps to making a decision. I once had a coach that focused on breathing and relaxing before a stressful situation. The release of air and the body can help the muscles and mental processes be more efficient, and alleviates the possibility of becoming overwhelmed by a decision.
Consider The Options
Considering the options is also another step that I think many people may skip. Often times in a situation, there are a few options that are more or less clear. But are there any other options? Is there anything that you haven't already considered? Could the options change if some of the conditions change? Walking through the different options and trying to find possible changes or "new options" can help make the playing field understandable and mentally digestable. It's always easier when you understand the conditions and what options are on the table.
Choose The Best Option
Lastly, weigh the different options and choose the "best option." Easier said than done? Well, maybe. I find that people may sometimes be hesitant to make a decision because they don't necessarily like any of the choices. Why would I choose something when I don't like the opportunities.
But what i find is that not always having the best choices can be very freeing in making easy decisions. If something is not possible (and I mean really not possible, even after taking the time to review it), then you do what is possible. Spending time dreaming about something that may not ever happen can seem noble. But it can also hinder a person from making any meaningful decision.
Being indecisive is difficult. More so when the options aren't great. But this should never hinder anyone from feeling trapped into making a choice. I hope this helps others who may be feeling something similar. Let me know if you have any questions!
