Let's learn little on physics today!

Optical fiber are wave guides that can carry light signals from one end to another end in a flexible strand of glass or a plastic.

~ It works on principle of Total Internal Reflection (TIR).

=> There are three types of optical fiber,

{1} Single Mode Fiber :

• Single mode fibre has a core and a cladding material with uniform refractive index
• In single mode fibre we can pass only one ray of light because of narrow core.
• The diameter of core in single mode fibre is 8µm to 10µm and diameter of cladding is 60µm to 70µm.
• In single mode fiber only LAZER is used as light source due to narrow core.

{2} Step Index Multi Mode Fiber :

• Step index multi mode fibre has a Core and a cladding.
• It has a large code so we can pass two or more light rays.
• The diameter of core in step index multi mode fibre is 50µm to 200µm and the diameter of cladding is 100µm to 250µm.
• In step index multi mode fiber LAZER or LED is used as a source of light.

{3} Graded Index Multi Mode Fiber :

• It is laso called as GRIN.
• The geometry of graded index multimode fibre is same as of step index multi mode fibre.
• The diameter of GRIN is larger than that of step index multi mode fibre.
• Refractive value decreases while propagating and thus give output as only one light.
• LAZER or LED is used as source of light.
