Got pretty close to this deer on the trail.

Not that close.

But too close for comfort … it high tailed it outta there.

To depart at once and with haste. A reference to the way some animals raise their tails when fleeing.
We hightailed it out of the party when we heard police sirens approaching.

We won't have much time to get to the airport, so once you're finished work, you just hightail it out of there, OK?

Run away. To run or ride a horse away from somewhere fast; to leave in a hurry. (Typically heard in western movies.) Here comes the sheriff. We'd better hightail it out of here. Look at that guy go. He really hightailed it out of town.
