Macro Thistle — More Art Effects Photography

Got this nice shot of one of the thistles blooming (rather late!) in our back yard... and decided to try some manipulation to create a more artistic impression:

As you can see, this isn't just a straight black-and-white, the detail in the flower has sharpened edges, and there are still minute traces of color in the image... fairly pleased with how it turned out, even though it was not a particularly high contrast image to begin with.

The actual black-and-white is somewhat dull and boring:

It's not a bad shot, but it lacks "intensity."

I have long been fascinated with macro work, and love how it can show us things we don't notice with the naked eye!
