Working in practical comfort in a world that is not for everyone.

It is a small experiment in creativity, you choose a word, search a free resource site for the image or photograph that results in a list, and then write a short narrative about it.

The word chosen was: Handy

I am observing a young woman at work.

In past centuries, women's work in my locality had been in her house or in the house of her Lord. Certainly I am against those retrograde things, but I understand that this was very ancient times. This young woman is a good example of what is the possibility and the employment opportunities listed for the female population.

She is a talented and young executive, she takes care of multiple businesses, attends to reports and responds with accurate, fast decisions and with the minimum of doubt.

It is the daughter chase that could make a family proud today.

This work environment is pleasant, the temperature and humidity are very well controlled and the sound insulation is good enough that it is not invaded by too much noise. It does not create a "bubble" but you do notice that it is a comfortable place as soon as you enter.

She is taking a call and seems to be very kindly requesting some information to be sent to her terminal. These days, work is made easier with these gimmicks.

In my youth the idea of communicating with a person at a distance without using installed and wired equipment, because that was unthinkable. Things have changed in this world. I keep working while from time to time I can't help looking at the young woman a bit.

Under normal conditions I would not come to this room, but due to a small accident, the mini-robot cleaning and vacuum cleaner seems to have broken down and I had to come, as it is a high-ranking space, they did not want to wait for the change of shift to send me.

I'm unlocking the little cleaning robot and my body is crouched near the hatch on the wall, just trying to figure out what got stuck in this thing and trying to repair everything without causing much noise.

Now that I'm done, I continue a little longer to enjoy this controlled climate, this comfort that I don't normally enjoy. I look at the young woman to see if by chance my presence causes her any discomfort, but I notice something that, although it helps me, depresses me a bit.

The young executive does not seem to notice me, as if I did not exist, or rather, it is like the attitude that the high ranking have with cleaning robots: "they are simply pieces of furniture that move."

The thought reminds me that this is the world we live in. There are people like them, who can enjoy equipment and facilities, and there are people like us, who even "should be thankful" for having some paid job that allows them to eat, even if the conditions and schedules are not comfortable or not at all practical.
