When you arrive at Ilha Grande you can find this fantastic postcard come true, that classic imaginary of a paradisiacal island in a tropical country, because this is this island located on the coast of Rio de Janeiro near Angra dos Reis, in this photo we are in the port of Vila do Abraão the main town of the island that has about 3 thousand inhabitants. The history of this island is quite particular during much of the nineteenth century, the island housed a place for the quarantine of the sick coming from abroad, before entering Rio de Janeiro, later was built the Colonia Penal Cândido Mendes, a place where they were sent some of the most dangerous criminals in the country during the Estado Novo and political prisoners during the military regime of 1964.

In 1994, the government decided to deactivate the prison, which trapped the local economy and was a source of serious security problems due to frequent prisoner escapes. After the governor of the State ordered the building to be dynamited in 1994, in 1998 the State University of Rio de Janeiro obtained the right to cede the area and the buildings that belonged to the prison, inaugurating the Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development.

Currently the main activity of the island is fishing and recently tourism, is known as the Brazilian Caribbean, and is famous for its beach Lopez Mendes known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, I will show you some pictures of this beach.

Cuando llegas a Ilha Grande te puedes encontrar con esta fantástica postal hecha realidad, ese clásico imaginario de una isla paradisiaca en un país tropical, pues así es esta isla que se encuentra en el litoral de Rio de Janeiro cerca de Angra dos Reis, en esta foto nos encontramos en el puerto de Vila do Abraão el principal poblado de la isla que cuenta con unos 3 mil habitantes. La historia de esta isla es bastante particular durante gran parte del siglo XIX, la isla albergó un local para la cuarentena de los enfermos que venían del extranjero, antes de entrar en Río de Janeiro, posteriormente fue construida la Colonia Penal Cândido Mendes, local a donde eran mandados algunos de los más peligrosos criminales del país durante el Estado Novo y presos políticos durante el régimen militar de 1964.

En 1994, el gobierno decidió desactivar el presidio, que atrapaba la economía local y era fuente de graves problemas de seguridad debido a las frecuentes fugas de prisioneros. Después de que en 1994 el gobernador del Estado mandara dinamitar el edificio, en 1998 la Universidad del Estado de Río de Janeiro, obtuvo el derecho de cesión del área y de las dependencias que pertenecían al presidio, inaugurando el Centro de Estudios Ambientales y Desarrollo Sostenible.

Actualmente la principal actividad de la isla es la pesca y recientemente el turismo, es conocida como el caribe brasileño, y es famosa por su playa Lopez Mendes conocida como una de las playas mas lindas del mundo, luego les mostrare alguna foto de esta playa.
Otra particularidad es que no hay automóviles en la isla ya que los pueblos están conectados por senderos o mediante embarcaciones.
