The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata

The Oberoi Grand, previously known as the Grand Hotel, is located at Explanade in Kolkata.

According to an article published on wikipedia, the foundation of the building, currently known as the Oberoi Grand, was laid at 13, Chowrighee road in the early ninteenth century. It was developed as a private residencial house, but Mrs. Annie Monk later changed it into a boarding house. In 1911, Stephen bought the buiding and did some redeveloment and converted it into a hotel.

In the 1930s, six people died in the hotel due to typhoid epidemic in Kolkata. That’s why the hotel was shut down in 1937. It was happened after the death of Stephen. Later, Mohan Singh Oberoi took the property in lease and restarted the hotel operation in 1939. However, the same property was taken over by him in 1943.
